Hullo! *waves*
Mar 17th, 2007 at 2:52pm

I came in to ask about head wraps and Sakina (and bikerbraid via a message I didn't realize I had - sorry) asked me to come and introduce myself over here. So, "hi!"

Okay. My hair. I have longish medium-brown hair that's slightly wavy. I'd say it's about three inches from my waist - although I don't measure and am terrible at estimating ("You have about a foot!" *car stops suddenly* *driver gets out and looks* "What are you talking about? That's three feet easy!" Whoops). Also, I cut a whole inch off today. It was necessary, but a little traumatic - mostly after the fact. Who knew an inch could make your hair feel so different? Smiley

(Or, you know, I could just show you a picture):
...

(Those aren't my real waves and the top isn't always that plastered-looking - I just took my hair out of a wrap)

Hmmm...what else do you need to know? I started growing my hair in earnest not that long ago (October I think), but I had been growing it out before by default - first because I moved to a new city and have extreme stylist distrust (butchers) and then because I knew I didn't have the money to keep up the cuts for a "current" style." But, I did hack it off myself now and then (including a rather ill-advised attempt at layers), which kept it from getting too long. Now, I know this is going to make me a little unpopular (hated with unbridled passion?  Grin) - but I decided during the last Breast Cancer Awareness month to continue growing it out to have enough to donate to the charity, Beautiful Lengths (a relatively new organization that makes wigs only for women with cancer), for a long hair wig and still have enough to keep past-shoulder-length for myself.

Sooo, to that end, I've been trying to take especially good care of my hair  Since this is the first time I've really taken care of it, I've grown to appreciate it and love it more than I ever have before. I figure it'll take me a long while to get to a length I think is suitable for cutting and I'm really enjoying my long hair in the mean time. And to be sappy - I sort of like that the next time I have a serious cut it's going to be a both a rational decision and a sacrifice of something I love, not just because, "Arrgh! I can't stand it anymore! Chop it off! Chop it off!" and then a relief for it to be gone - which has happened to me before and would have happened already this time if I hadn't made the commitment. So, donating my hair is going to give me the opportunity to experience truly long hair, a point I never would get to without it, because of that "must cut" itch.  (so, yay for hair donation?)

*ducks tomatoes*

Anyway, it's very nice to meet you all  Smiley

Hello Abgrubb!  Nice to meet you.  I am fairly new here myself, but these boards are great and everybody is really helpful.  I just have to say that your hair is gorgeous.  I definitely am experiencing hair envy.  It is so shiny and smooth looking and even  though you said they weren't yours the waves are so nice.  Sorry I am going on but I recently cut my hair all one length and it brought it above my shoulders. I wanted to have a healthy startbut nowI feel like it is going to take forever to grow out.   Also I think it is wonderful that you want to donate your hair to such a good cause.  Thanks for sharing your pic!  It was nice to meet you!!Smiley

Hi!  Glad you stopped by to introduce yourself and share a picture.  Your hair is lovely!  Such a beautiful color and it looks so thick.

Your goal of growing your hair long so you can donate it is fine.  I'm not familiar with that organization, so I can't state my opinion of it.  Not all hair collecting charities are necessarly bad.  And if you cut and donate your hair by YOUR choice, I have no problem with it.  Go for it!

How could you ever feel that way about such beautiful hair!?! Shocked  Anyway, donating your hair won't make you unpopular or hated here, it's a very nice thing to do.  Good luck in growing and I hope you enjoy your long hair experience! Wink

Hi and welcome !

As everyone else has said you do have very beautiful hair indeed - Mother Nature's most prized gift of all.... Smiley

Thing is though once you get say to hip length who knows how you'll feel about it then when you see it in the mirror ?

It kinda does grow on you literally (!) because the next thing you know you'll find yourself wondering what it might feel like lightly brushing your hips, then the back of your thighs, then your knees, then your calves ! And in the meantime wanting to go for a swim just to be able to watch it flowing behind you in your wake like a heavenly cloud…. Wink Then you'll start wondering whatever happened to that old "must cut" itch. I read over on JJJ's website she said every woman should get to experience really long hair just once in their life.

http://www.jjjlonghairphotopage.zoomshare.com/

So then you'll decide you'll want to.....

Betcha !! Wink Wink
(Of course by that time you can then always let your charity have say a couple of feet every other year or two without losing most of what you've worked so hard and so long to achieve !! Thus the Win-Win situation and the best of both worlds  Wink)

Good luck whatever you do decide of course !

Greetings and welcome, abgrubb  *waves back*

What a powerful thing you're doing, growing your hair for charity. No one's hurling tomatoes, don't worry.  Grin

Best of luck in this experience. Who knows? You might enjoy having long hair so much that you decide to grow it again. For yourself.  Wink

I was a little defensive, huh? Sorry about that.  (*scolds self for making assumptions*). I appreciate the support  Smiley (and all the welcomes).

Thanks for all the compliments on my hair. Means more coming from hair people. Unfortunately, it doesn't always look that nice. My hair is moody and fickle (and often very very grumpy). Maybe I should post pictures of when it's frizzy and separated  Cheesy. It seems to only be slick and shiny on days where I have to where it up (making it slip out of whatever I have holding it) and a frizzy, greasy/straw-like mess on days I really want to wear it down (you couldn't be slick and nice on the day of the wedding, could you, hair?). We have a love-hate relationship.

As for why I get the urge to cut. I don't know. It just happens. I'll be sitting at home, minding my own business, when suddenly my hair starts to feel too long. *shrugs*

Oh, and as for the swimming. As much as I like my hair, I can't take it in the water: always up - usually in french braids on either side. (Plus I'm usually someplace public, so when it gets really long I'll add the fear of tangling a small child up in it *L*).

Welcome, glad you've introduced yourself.

When your hair is feeling like straw, give it a clarifying shampoo or vinegar rinse!!  Then use a moisturizing conditioner afterwards, leaving a little on the hair (meaning don't rinse it all out) or add a leave in and then air dry it.
