I'm continuing the routine of two no-wash days in between cleansing. Seems to be working quite well. I hope to eventually extend the time between wash days, but I'll not rush it. Still using Tre Semme s+c, and performing vinegar rinses once a week, and oiling the ends on wash day. My regular "style" has become a part down the middle with the sides held back with hair-friendly barrettes.

Happy new year, eh?! Like a lot of others here, I'm hoping 2007 is better (in a lot of ways) than 2006.

You know, I had a revelation of sorts while I was on break. When I was younger, Christmas was my favorite holiday. It was tops. I was always very happy during the Christmas season--couldn't wait for it to arrive and was always sad to see it end. But for the past few years my feelings have changed toward Christmas. I almost always become unhappy...not cranky really, just...bristly about everything. And this year was no different. During my break I started thinking about the different holidays, comparing my feelings about them. And I think I figured it out. I realized that I now feel about Easter the way I used to feel about Christmas. It must be because of my relationship with God, don't you think? I mean, Christmas has gotten so commercialized it's sickening. It's all about the money. But Easter, despite the candy and basket sales, etc., is still about Jesus and what's important.

Kind of silly, I know, but I just wanted to share that with you.

Wash day; hair is parted on the side. Just had a conversation with the student worker about greasy hair. She was complaining about having to wash her hair every day because otherwise it looks terrible (so she says). I explained to her about stripping away the natural oil and how our scalps produce more to compensate, etc. I must have done a decent job of explaining because she said, "Makes sense!". Now, whether she changes her routine is another matter. Wink

All we can do is provide people with the information; we can't hold a gun to their head and force them to treat their hair nicely!

My good friend, T, telephoned over the holiday break, terribly upset and crying so hard she could barely speak. She had just been given the news that she must have a hysterectomy. We have been friends since elementary school and I know her heart's desire has always been to become a wife and mother. She was heartbroken about never being able to have a child. I told her she could always adopt, and she said something about not being flesh and blood. I said, "Flesh and blood doesn't make a family", and she admitted I was right.
Anyway, I spoke to T again last evening and she was doing much better. She was calmer and her spirits were much higher. I didn't mention the possibility of cancer because she's easily freaked out. The surgery is scheduled for February 20, and I've assured her that I will help in any way I can. You know, I certainly didn't relish going through the whole hysterectomy/ovarian cancer thing in 2003. But I am so thankful that I am able to turn around and help others with my experience.

Nothing new to report, which is a good thing.

Life is about to get a whole lot more interesting...again. Shocked

Hubby is scheduled for back surgery this Thursday, the 11th. Two bad discs in his lower spine will be removed and replaced with "spacers". Bone grafts and titanium screws will fuse everything together, hopefully giving him much needed pain relief (please Lord). Hubby will have a hospital stay of 4-5 days, and I'm assuming there'll be some type of physical therapy afterwards to aid in his healing. I'll be taking off work for about a week and a half to watch over my dearest. I'll post more details after Thursday.

I'll be thinking of you both during hubby's surgery. I've had the lower 1/3 of my spine fused and have the rods and screws too. He may be pleasantly surprised to find out the pain after the surgery is actually less than what he has been dealing with before the surgery. Getting around will be a bit slow at first, but it gets better every day.

Nothing new to report on the hair front. I desperately need to get an official measurement for the new year!

Finally back online after a, what? --Two and a half week absence? Sheesh. I missed this place very much.

Thanks to all of you who have been keeping hubby and me in your thoughts and prayers. Hubby's surgery took about 5 hours. Two bad discs were removed and replaced with...I don't know what. He also has rods and screws (titanium, no less) now for added support. He's recuperating amazingly well, although there's still a long way to the finish line. I'll tell you what...taking care of someone else 24 hours a day is HARD work (even if you do love them). I have a newfound respect for caregivers everywhere.

I was able to do some work from my home computer, so I'm actually not behind in my tasks. But I've still been very busy today. I can't stay long; I just wanted to let y'all know that I'm back and I've missed everyone.

The road to full recovery may be a long one, but it's downhill. I think it's safe to say that the worst part is over. Have fun playing mother/nursemaid while he heals up. haha All the best.

I'm glad you stopped by to give us an update on hubby's progress. You may be surprised at how quickly he will recover. I know I was amazed at how quickly I was up and walking (not quickly, but hey - just being back on my feet was good!). The pain subsides more every day. The body has amazing healing qualities.

I will keep you both in my thoughts for a quick and complete recovery.

Hair
No wash day. Length of hair is down with sides held back with barettes (parted down the middle). I'm planning on measuring the length this Thursday, which happens to be wash day and the first day of February.

Classes are back in session here at Southeast. The spring semester began while I was on family medical leave. I'm having good success at keeping up with all of the requests for student data--it seems everyone wants to mail something to the students. (They're busy studying--leave 'em alone!!)

   Yesterday was my first day back at the office. Before I returned I wanted hubby to be able to do 3 things: 1. take a shower by himself, 2. dress himself completely, and 3. get in and out of bed on his own. By the end of last week he was able to accomplish all of those items, so I felt comfortable returning to work. Luckily, I have an amazing boss who understands the need to be with family during such times.
   I think hubby's next big step will be to wean himself off the pain medication and muscle relaxant, so that he can resume driving. I know good and well he's getting cabin fever, but I don't want him to be in pain if it's not necessary. Still, he's his own boss and must make that decision.
   Even with our cold temperatures (and I mean COLD), I wore a skirt yesterday and a dress today. The skirt was a long black velvet deal with a slit up one side; I wore a frilly white blouse with it, along with black leggings and black knee high socks. I kept thinking of Angel because the whole ensemble had a decidedly Victorian look to it.

Well, it's a little after one o'clock now, so it's back to work I go.
