Carolina Herrera Manages “Best Dress” and “Worst Dress” in One Fell Swoop

So, I’m surfing the private sales like I do almost every day (much to my husband’s eternal dismay) and at Gilt I came across this *gorgeous* silk chiffon beaded gown by Carolina Herrera. Or, at least I think it’s a gorgeous gown.

Now, don’t get me wrong, there are always divine things in these private designer sales, but every once in awhile I come across something so stunning that it actually makes me stop and go, “Oooooooooooooo!”  This dress did that for me; however, after I took a glimpse of the closeup pics, I’m not so sure.  Of course, it probably didn’t hurt that my husband, ever the poetic fashion critic,  mentioned that it looked like the model had “some kind of salad hanging from her armpit.”

In the end, I decided that Ms. Herrera, she of some of the most elegant designs in the fashion world, has managed to create a gown that would equally gain “Best Dressed” and “Worst Dressed” comments from those who would be critics. Stunningly beautiful from afar but up close… mebbe not so much.  So you tell me, hit, miss or both?

One Response to Carolina Herrera Manages “Best Dress” and “Worst Dress” in One Fell Swoop

    Both
like many of the BEST items of art, its a love it or hate it reaction….
one of the hallmarks of some of the best fashion is the fact that it evokes a passionate response in people. its hard to be neutral.

now my opinion? This dress is meant to be seen on the red carpet. its meant to be seen from a slight distance and probably *in motion* where the many small fluttering elements will add fluid motion, and accentuate every move on the red carpet or dance floor. This dress is also designed to get the wearer NOTICED.. the primary goal of a red carpet dress.

and whether you love this dress or hate it, its going to get you photographed, it WILL get press, it will get notice.. and from a celebrity stand point? thats one big win….

and they will all mention the designer, even if they hate her design….. publicity, in this business, is king.

i bet it looke stunning moving, though…. even if its not at all my taste
